Principal Investigator / Supervisor: Dr. SOUMEN DEY
Dr. Soumen Dey was born in Kolkata, the city of joy in 1977. He received his B.Sc., M.Sc. (Chemistry), and B.Ed. from Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan (a university established by the great Rabindranath Tagore, the first Asian Nobel laureate). Thereafter he moved to Presidency University Kolkata in 2001 and joined JRF in a UGC-sponsored project on Arsenic poisoning. He then qualified for CSIR-UGC-NET JRF in 2002 and joined the group of Prof. Sabyasachi Sarkar (AvH and Ramanna fellow)at I.I.T. Kanpur, India. He received a Ph.D. in the year 2009. The area of research was the eco-friendly synthesis and host-guest sensing by calixpyrrole-based macromolecules. Reactivity with higher valent transition metals has been well demonstrated. He is experienced in spectroscopic, surface and crystallographic techniques.
He joined as an Assistant Professor
in the Department of Chemistry, S.K.M. University Dumka, Jharkhand in March 2008. In April
2011 he moved to the Central University of Jharkhand where he is working as a
Senior Assistant Professor.
So far he has published 54 research papers in reputed journals and 4 book chapters. He has successfully guided 4 students for their Ph.D. and 56 students for their Master's dissertations. Currently, 2 more students are working on their Ph.D.
His current research area is to
develop environmentally benign techniques for wastewater treatment for safer health. Various plant-derived materials have been demonstrated as
phytosorbents. Magnetic metal oxide nanoparticles have been recently synthesized
and used as potential materials for water treatment. Some representative

Dr. Dey received the prestigious FASTSF-2022 fellowship (Focus Area Science and Technology) conferred by IASc-INSA-NASI in April 2022 to work on cutting-edge 'Air pollution monitoring' at CSIR-NEERI, Mumbai Zonal Center.
He received 'The Distinguished Researcher Award' from the Central University of Jharkhand on the occasion of the 13th Foundation Day (March 2022).
Dr.
Dey is twice the recipient of the ‘Young Scientist Award' conferred by the Indian
Chemical Society in the years 2002 and 2008. He received a major research grant
from SERB-DST, India under Young Scientist Scheme (INR 24.50 Lakh). He has
delivered 10 invited lectures at various scientific meetings.
He has been invited to deliver lectures in London, U.K.
He is currently a reviewer of many prestigious journals such as the Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data (ACS), ACS Omega, Environmental Progress (Wiley), Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering (Elsevier), and International Journal of Phytoremediation (Taylor and Francis). Dr. Dey is a member of various coveted societies such as the American Chemical Society, Chemical Research Society of India, Indian Council of Chemists, and I.I.T. Kanpur Alumni Association.
Apart
from academics he also actively takes part in Institutional Management
committees; the Academic Council (2015-2020), Board of Studies, Research
Advisory Council, and Board of Research. He held the position of ‘Coordinator’
of the Department of Education (2014-17). Besides, he actively contributed as
hostel Warden and mentor for the good living of the students. As a part of
outreach activity and social responsibility, Dr. Dey has trained many school
teachers (Delhi Public School) in various innovative techniques to
teach Chemical Sciences.
He is the 'Member of the Court', the apex Regulatory body of Central University of Jharkhand since August 2023
Currently, he is serving as Assistant Registrar (NEP regulations and implementation) since April 2023.

Dr. Md. Atif. Qaiyum (2019 - 24)
Atif was born in Ranchi in 1994. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Chemistry) from Ranchi University, Ranchi. He then qualified for CUCET and joined in September 2019 for his Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Soumen Dey. He completed his master’s dissertation at Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) Ranchi where he gained experience in the analysis of coal by qualitative and quantitative aspects.
So far, he has published 22 research papers in prestigious peer-reviewed journals such as Biomass Conv. Biorefin., J. Cluster. Sci, Int. J. Phytoremediation, ACS Omega. His present research deals with detoxifying water containing dyes and heavy metals using various plant-derived biomaterials and synthetic materials. The preparation and application of metal oxide and nanoparticles are some of his recent ongoing works.
He was awarded Ph.D. on February 5th, 2024.
He joined as an Assistant Professor in Chemistry, at K. K. University Nalanda on November 2023 and worked till November 2024.
He moved to Chaitanya Bharti Institute of Technology on November 2024.
Dr. Jhilirani Mohanta (2016 - 21)
Jhilirani was born in Mayurbhanj, Odisha in 1991. She received her B.Sc. (Chemistry), M.Sc. (Industrial Chemistry), from Maharaja Purna Chandra (Autonomous) College, North Orissa University (2015), and M. Phil. (Inorganic Chemistry) from Sambalpur University, Sambalpur (2016). Thereafter she moved to the Institute of Mineral Material Technology (CSIR-IMMT) Bhubaneswar in 2016 and joined as PA-II in a MHRD sponsored project on ‘Synthesis on metal oxide nanoparticles and their application’.
She then joined in Ph.D. through CUCET-2016 in the group of Dr. Soumen Dey in October 2016. The area of research is the eco-friendly synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles and the removal of pollutants from contaminant water. She is experienced in spectroscopic, and various instrumental techniques.
So far she has published 19 research papers in reputed journals of ACS, Springer, Taylor & Francis and contributed 1 book chapter. Her current research area is to develop environmentally benign techniques for wastewater treatment. Magnetic metal oxide nanoparticles have been recently synthesized and used as potential materials for water treatment. Some representative publications are as follows:
Jhilirani bagged the Best Poster award in the international conference on ‘Green & Efficient Energy Technology Materials’, CUJ in 2019.
She received her Ph.D. in November 2021.
Currently, she is serving as an Assistant Professor (regular) by Odisha Public Service Commission and joined M. P. C. Autonomous College Baripada since July 2023.
Dr. Roshni Kumari (2015 - 20)
She has also
worked as a scientist at State Forensic Sciences Laboratory Ranchi as a Senior technician. Thereafter, she worked as Asst. Professor at RKDF University Ranchi as a faculty member.
Currently, she is working as a Senior Research Associate in the Center of Excellence in Geothermal Science, Pandit Deendayal Energy University Gandhinagar, Gujarat since March 2022.
Dr. Sambasivaiah. B (2013-18)
Sambasivaiah was born in the holy city of Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh in 1988. He received his B.Sc and M.Sc from Sri Venkateswara University Tirupati. Thereafter, he worked in industry for one year. He joined for PhD at Central University of Jharkhand under the guidance of Dr. Soumen Dey in 2013. His area of research is to explore calixpyrrole-based macrocycles, their synthesis, and host-guest binding. Reactivity with transition metals was also demonstrated. He has published 4 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has also presented his research at various scientific meetings including CRSI national symposium.
Currently, he is working as Asst.
Professor at Sanskriti College of Engineering Puttaparthy, Andhra Pradesh since
2019. Besides, he is also engaged in various institute management committees.

He had completed the two days’
workshop on recently developed materials by Jharkhand council on science and
technology in 2018, conducted seminar in graduation on Nanotechnology, and
received various awards for debate and speech competition on science day in

environmental toxicology. His title of research is ‘Fabricated adsorbents for
rapid removal of aquatic toxicants’.

She had delivered various speeches and

Mr. P.N.V. Krishna (2019-21)
P.N.V.Krishna was born in Uyyalawada,
Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh on 5th December 1995. He received his Bacheler’s Degree from
S.V.University, Tirupati in the year 2018 and pursuing M.Sc. in Central
University of Jharkhand, Ranchi.
He has participated in district level sports like Chess,1.5k marathon.
He worked for project work under Dr. Soumen Dey on the topic “Removal of Dyes through Adsorption process”.
Currently he is pursuing Ph.D. from I.I.T. Madras, Chennai. His area of research is organic synthesis using green techniques. He qualified NET JRF, GATE, SLET.

Mr. Vivek Kumar(2016-21),
5-yr integrated M.Sc.
Vivek was born in Bokaro , a major industrial center and fourth largest city of Jharkhand. He joined integrated M.Sc in 2016. He has participated in School level cricket tournament ( Zonal level ) . He has also done event management in techno cultural fest NAVADHAR- 2019 and KHELOTSAV- in 2019 and 2020.
His area of work is ‘starch grafted composite for enhanced water treatment’.

Pallavi was born in Kolkata. She received her
B.Sc. from Rammohan College under University of Calcutta and joined M.Scin 2018.
She obtained highest CGPA in her batch. She had undertaken various projects in
environmental sustainability. Her M.Sc Project topic was “A constructive review
on removal of dye effluents from water”
Besides, she also got selected for summer
internships with collaboration with Dr. Amit Majumdar at IACS Kolkata (May-July
2019). She worked on the topic, “Synthesis and Spectroscopic Characterization
of a Dicobalt (II) complex in a symmetric dinucleating ligand”.
She bagged various awards: First
prize in “Chemiquiz - Mystic Chemistry” (UGC Sponsored International Year Of
Chemistry 2011 Celebration) held in Scottish Church College on December 2011.
She Ranked 157th in the city in 7th National Cyber
Olympiad, 2007.

Adnan Khan (2015-20, 5-yr Integrated M.Sc)
Apart from research he is also has
a keen interest in teaching and is an active member in Unnayan (an initiative
of CUJ) for the education of economically weaker children. He actively participate in Quiz and talks and
has received 92% in online quiz organized by Govt. J. Yoganandam Chhattisgarh College(CG) in 2020-21 by Dept. of Chemistry. Currently he is pursuing his Ph.D. in BIT Mesra, Ranchi.
Mr. Mithilesh Mahto (2015-20, 5-yr Integrated M.Sc)
Mr.
MithileshMahto was born in Ranchi, the home town of M.S.Dhoni. He received his integrated M.Sc. in
2020. His Master’s Thesis topic: Batch Investigation ofRemoval of Malachite
Green by Dewaxed Honeycomb: A LOW-COST ADSORBENT. He is experienced in UV
visible spectrometer, column modeling and graphical interpretation (origin
software). He has published his Master’s project research in ACS Omega. His
title of the thesis is: Honeycomb derived adsorbents for efficient wastewater
treatment.

Ms. Jyoti Kumari (2013-18, 5 yr
Integrated M.Sc.)
Jyoti was born in the rail city Chittaranjan, West Bengal. She
first joined in the integrated B.Sc.-B.Ed. program and later moved in the
Department of Chemistry. She received her integrated M.Sc. in the year 2018.
Her title of the research was: Thiosulfate impregnated spent tea leaves as a potential phyto-sorbent for water treatment. Her research finding has been published in Int. J. Phytoremediation.

Bhagat (2012-17, 5 yr integrated M.Sc)
Her
title of the thesis was: ‘A Natural, Low Cost Biosorbent Tricosanthes cucumerina
for the Scavenging of Methylene Blue: A study of Kinetics, Isotherm &
Equilibrium’.
She published her work in Bioremediation Journal.
After teaching in a school at Jamshedpur for couple of years, she joined Pandit Deendayal University Gandhinagar for Ph.D.
Ms. Lily Dipty (2011-16, 5-yr
Integrated M.Sc.)
Lily was born in Dumka, the sub-capital of Jharkhand.
She received her M.Sc. in 2016. She explored the biodiversity of Chhotanagpur
Plateau and judiciously chosen an unconventional biosorbent ‘saal flower’ (Shorearobusta)
for dye discoloration from contaminated water.
